Temporal DWG Workplan

Chris Little edited this page Jul 12, 2024 · 4 revisions

Following the publication of the Abstract Conceptual Model for Time (OGC23-049r2), it is envisaged that the Temporal DWG will work on devising and publishing Best Practices.

  • Register Temporal Coordinate Reference Systems with the OGC Naming Authority

    • Add 360Day year as Temporal CRS
    • Add T-/+dd as “countdown” Temporal CRS, in seconds, days, etc “Countup” too
    • Refine TCRS Q/C form
  • Register some Calendars with the OGC Naming Authority

    • Put Gregorian DateTime as separate (Calendar?) branch in NA register
    • Refine TCRS Q/C form
  • Develop Best Practice

    • Use RFC3339 restrictive profile of ISO8601-1 for timestamps
    • Use ‘Z’ for timestamps on persistent resources. Time zone shifts belong in clients
    • Temporal CRSs and Calendars are different things. Notation is neither.
      • In particular, xsd:DateTime is not a proper CRS
    • Moving Features, especially fast ones, should have their own clocks/time
    • Calibrating, synchronizing and coordinating clocks and timescales. Important for precisions below a minute, down to nanoseconds.
      • Trawl NGA/DoD Imagery Handbook Chapter 6 for best practices
    • Timescales and Timelines should be monotonic and continuous

• Collaborate with ISO TC154 and TC211 on Calendars, CRSs, Notations, Vocabularies and Models • Form views on EDTF, IETF RFC3339, ISO 8601-1/2/3, and revisions • Collaborate over Planetary and Outer Space Coordinate Systems • Moving and Dynamic Features? • GeoPose? • Implementation standards?? • Anything else??
