I have had a typos branch running, collecting typos I notice that are unrelated to whatever I am working on. So one thing here is those typos.
Also as I was reviewing UK versus US English relating to #2553, I found that 'toward' is the US variant and 'towards' is preferred in the UK. So I changed several 'towards' to the US version. If this is OK, perhaps I will then need to change the en-GB to use 'towards' again.
Lastly, it came up that whether it's the US or the UK, 'cannot' is preferred over 'can not', and I made such changes.
These three things are in separate commits if any of them is not a good change to make. This is just all rather cosmetic/irrelevant stuff, so I packaged them together.
