xau and xa'u are the only word in selma'o XAU and XAhU, respectively. xau transforms an opening sentinel into it's terminator. xa'u is an all-purpose terminator that terminates the most recent sentinel --the current open clause. xau is a Magic Word.

For every magic word, the interaction with other magic words must be clarified. This table covers the interactions of xau with other magic words, both alone and within their own grammatical contexts. Since these sentinel markers make the old terminators unnecessary, it is expected that over time they would fall into disuse. While not something that would happen overnight, obviously, eventually they might be freed up for other uses --or even just left unused to provide some phonological gap in the lexicon. Certain terminators already get very little use, so those are the most likely to transition sooner. Others, such as li'u and le'u might never fall into disuse because they are used more regularly.
Changes to BNF are fairly straight-forward. For example,

Q: How can I use xau at the end of a lo'u quote?
A: Just repeat the xau, e.g. lo'u ... xau xau lo'u. Of course, you can still use the le'u terminator.
Q: What about using xau at the end of a lu quote?
A: I think that would be non-grammatical so wouldn't be allowed in any case.
