In this doc, you'll learn: how to prepare and package WISC face shields.

Before You Begin

Materials (makes about 100 shields):

  • 100 clear plastic sheets: 5-15 mil, 9"x9-13"
  • 50 yards of elastic ribbon, and scissors that can cut it
  • 100 1"x1"x6" foam blocks, preferably self-adhering on the long edge
  • Powered stapler + 400 office staples
  • 10 clear 13 gallon recycling bags
  • 10 disclaimer notices (this page)

Quickstart

Material & Equipment Selection and Notes

Plastic

  • Shield plastic should be 9" tall and anywhere from 9" to 13" wide, with wider plastics preferred for better coverage.
  • Softer or thinner plastic bends better; if the plastic is too stiff, it can tend to pop out from the forehead like a visor rather than bend around its circumference.
  • Cut the lower corners off for better range of motion for the wearer.

Foam

  • Softer foam is better than more rigid foam. If the foam is too rigid, it tends to flake and leave 'crumbs' all over the shields, making them look dirty.
  • Cutting large amounts of foam goes quickly with a band saw. While the foam pieces should be 1"x1"x6", the dimensions don't have to be perfect; some masking tape on the band saw bed to indicate dimensions can save slow measuring. Always use a scrap of wood to push foam into the saw, and wear goggles when using the band saw.

Staples and Staplers

  • A powered stapler will prevent injury from repetitive stress when stapling many shields. But, have a regular stapler as a backup, especially if your powered stapler is unreliable or struggles with your plastic.
