Distribution Strategy

In this doc, you'll learn: how to stage product for pickup and delivery, and how to coordinate couriers between stockpiles and consumers.

Quickstart / Summary

  • Find at least one distribution hub that has the space to stockpile and the accessibility to receive and distribute product to and from couriers.
  • Courier responsibilities are a good thing to delegate to another set of people besides your distribution team, but be sure to maintain close contact with them during deliveries.

Establishing Distribution Hubs

  • If you live in a large city or area, it’s helpful to have a few ‘hubs’ in different areas where the PPE can be stored and easily picked up by delivery couriers. This will help prevent multiple pick-up points for couriers, and cut down on travel time when distributing.
  • Good candidates for possible hubs include:
    • Makerspaces, warehouses, or underutilized businesses: if shelter in place or quarantine orders are in effect, places such as these might have significant space available for the duration of the shutdown, and may be convenient if raw materials are being delivered there for PPE production. Make sure, though, that your volunteers or couriers will be able to access the space to pick up and drop off product at will.
    • Volunteer homes: private residences may be more limited on space than business and light industry, but may have the advantage of being more regularly accessible to couriers if the resident is usually home.
  • Make sure every distribution hub has an inventory of every type of PPE you want to distribute, in order to prevent a courier from having to visit multiple hubs just to fill a single order.

Coordinating Couriers

  • It’s best to outsource some work by finding other groups who can help with other important and key roles like delivery.
  • Be sure to give clear instructions to your couriers, and stay in contact with them throughout delivery, in order to help solve any communication issues or problems.
  • Once your courier has finished a job, move the row over to your Completed Tab. This will help you keep track of the impact you’re having in the community, and will be a useful reference point if there are any questions about a drop-off or order.
