On the website I read that I could hide the dock icons by dragging the dock icon to the bottom. When I do that, I get the icons reappear from the top as they go down the bottom

If you have new enough version of wmaker, you can disable it in WPrefs (expert user preferences, untick 'Wrap dock-attached icons around the screen edges.')
If you don't have such an option, quit wmaker, edit ~/GNUStep/Defaults/WindowMaker and add:
WrapAppiconsInDock = NO;
somewhere between the topmost curly braces, save the file and start wmaker again.
I'll leave this issue open, since there is no documentation about this behavior.
