Icon Request

  • Icon name: gender icons
  • Use case: representing genders
  • Screenshots of similar icons:
    image

This is a continuation of feathericons/feather#27 as per #119

Here are a few rough drafts of all 14 gender icons currently implemented by Fontawesome.
(link removed)

All of these more or less comply with our design guidelines, however are probably nowhere near final.
One of the things up for discussion is probably whether we should aim to use the same base element sizes for all of them, but I'm not quite sure that's feasible.

Hi ! I'm interested in those, but can't seem to find them in the library.

Maybe this issue should be reopened (currently closed as completed) ?

Hello, these icons would indeed be interesting to integrate?

So, lucide won't integrate gender icons ? Confused about the "not-planned" label and the closing of the issue without any explanation.

Why not planned ? Have you explanations ?

@btnalexandre All fine with me! But I think you want @karsa-mistmere, @jguddas and/or @ericfennis for any definitive movement on these ones…

@jguddas you closed this issue as not planned in March.

Can you explain, please, why it's not planned?

If it was closed by mistake, can you reopen this issue, please?

There is a little bit of a backstory as to why we still haven't added these.
In the beginning, I was a bit skeptical about adding these icons since there is nowadays a big list of gender identities, and many of these probably are too specific to add.
What even makes it more complicated is that gender-like icons are often used to indicate sexual orientation as well.

But to move on this topic I suggest we add these basic ones:

  • male
  • female
  • bi-gender

Others are also welcome but can be added to Lucide Lab, where we can research the use of these icons and add them to the main library if there are well-described use cases.

I'm trying to make a medical app for veterinarians. They only have male and female animals. Can we start with the basics and add in the gender identities later?

I'm not gonna end a gender-male and gender-female icon without also adding a gender-other icon.

Best I can come up with is:

Seems like good!

Some potentially viable options:

venus-and-mars

icons
Open lucide studio

transgender

icons
Open lucide studio

mars-stroke

icons
Open lucide studio

mars-stroke-up

icons
Open lucide studio

mars-stroke-right

icons
Open lucide studio

venus-venus

icons
Open lucide studio

venus-mars

icons
Open lucide studio

mars-mars

icons
Open lucide studio

The icon I'm least happy with is transgender because in order to fulfil Lucide's two-pixel-gap rule, the androgyne portion is artificially long, and the tip of its arrow is too short. However, in a set like this, this is probably one of the most important icons to include, as it has the most additional use cases (transgender / gender inclusivity / unisex).

Until there's a satisfactory design for this, I think this blocks such a set from being included.

For a medical app, I like to cover the concepts of Administrative Gender of the FHIR standard which includes male, female, other and unknown. I think this might be a solid use case to keep in mind when designing these icons. Further read: https://hl7.org/xprod/ig/uv/gender-harmony/

venus, mars and mars-stroke-right would cover male, female and other, I guess. For unknown would something like fa-genderless (Font Awesome) or Lucides circle be a good choice?

I noticed the circle parts in the latest designs have different size in each icon. This is different to first draft here, where they have the same size, what might make them easier to compare.

I like the pragmatic idea from earlier posts to release a more basic set first, while figuring out the more complex ones after. Of course, I'm looking forward to seeing and using all the other inclusive icons as well. Would be great to also have some kind of guide to help with picking the right icons for different use-cases.

@jvolker I also have been using the FHIR standard for direction on developing this application for the veterinary community. I agree if you can support at a minimum the 4 different values the FHIR medical database uses then it would be useful for human and animal medicine.
