I am pondering what should be the base JDK version that FreeMarker 3 should support. Well, I'm quite certain that nothing before JDK 8 is worth bothering with. I guess I take it as a given that FreeMarker 3.x will primarily be used in new projects. I somehow don't envisage so many people putting in a big effort to upgrade existing systems. But I really don't know what we should do. Maybe it would be better if we just assumed JDK 17 and then didn't jump through any hoops to support records, for example, while maintaining backward compatibility with Java versions that don't have that. (Pre JDK 16, I think.) That's just an example.
For new development, what JDK version would you be using?
