I ran into this post on Python Weekly which shows how to use Luigi to build workflows, manage dependencies, schedule tasks, etc. in Python. Luigi was developed at Spotify and appears to be one of the leading workflow management libraries in Python. Probably worth looking into as this could be useful for QIIME 2.
