"body": "\nComo arqueóloga,\nvivem me perguntando\nqual é minha descoberta predileta.\nA resposta é fácil:\nmeu marido, Greg.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNos conhecemos no Egito\nna minha primeira escavação.\nFoi minha primeira lição sobre encontrar\ncoisas inesperadas e maravilhosas.\nEsse foi o início de uma incrível\nparceria arqueológica.\nAnos depois, pedi sua mão em casamento\nna frente do nosso par\nde estátuas predileto,\ndo príncipe Rahotep e da princesa Nofret,\nno Museu do Cairo,\ndatadas de 4,6 mil anos.\n\n\nAchei que, se ia pedir a Greg\npara passar o resto da vida comigo,\nentão deveria fazer isso\nna frente de duas pessoas\nque tinham jurado ficar juntas\npor toda a eternidade.\nEsses símbolos perduram,\nporque, quando olhamos para eles,\nestamos olhando para espelhos.\nEles são poderosos lembretes\nde que nossa humanidade\nem comum não mudou.\n\n\nA excitação da descoberta arqueológica\né tão poderosa quanto o amor,\npois a história antiga é a amante\nmais sedutora que se possa imaginar.\nMuitos arqueólogos devotaram suas vidas\na desvendar os mistérios do passado,\nseja sob um sol escaldante,\nnos ventos do Ártico\nou nas densas florestas tropicais.\nMuitos procuram.\nAlguns descobrem.\nTodos veneram o templo da possibilidade\nde que uma descoberta\npossa mudar a história.\n\n\nNo meu primeiro dia no Egito,\ntrabalhei num lugar\nchamado Mendes,\nno nordeste do delta egípcio,\ndatado de 4,2 mil anos, num cemitério.\nEsta aí sou eu, toda feliz.\nNa escavação, rodeada\nde arrozais verdes-esmeralda,\ndescobri um pote intacto.\nAo virar o pote,\ndescobri uma digital humana\ndeixada por quem fez o vaso.\nPor um instante, o tempo parou.\nNão sabia onde eu estava.\nE, por causa daquele momento,\npercebi que, quando cavamos,\nbuscamos pessoas,\nnão coisas.\n\n\nNunca estamos tão presentes\ncomo em meio a um grande passado.\nNem consigo contar quantas vezes\nestive na frente das Pirâmides de Gizé,\nmas elas sempre me deixam sem palavras.\nMe sinto a pessoa mais sortuda do mundo.\nElas são um monumento à genialidade\nhumana e a tudo que é possível.\nMuitos não conseguem ver\nessa genialidade como um feito humano,\nacham que alienígenas as construíram.\nMas isso é ridículo.\nBasta nos aproximar e olhar de perto\npara vermos a mão oculta do homem\nnas marcas de cinzel deixadas\npelas ferramentas que as construíram.\nA Grande Pirâmide de Gizé foi\nconstruída pedra por pedra,\ncom 2,3 milhões de blocos,\ncom incrível eficiência.\nNão foram as pirâmides\nque passaram no teste do tempo;\nfoi a engenhosidade humana.\nA excelência humana que comungamos.\nA história pode ser cíclica,\nmas nós somos os mesmos.\n\n\nAdoro o que faço,\npois vejo que não mudamos.\nLeio piadas de sogra da Mesopotâmia,\nde 3,5 mil anos atrás.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFico sabendo de vizinhos\nxingando uns aos outros\n4,6 mil anos atrás, no Egito.\nE a minha predileta,\nde 3,3 mil anos, de Luxor:\numa inscrição que fala de garotos\nmatando aula para ir beber.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAh, esses jovens de hoje...\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTenho a chance de ver\na arquitetura mais incrível,\nadmirar esculturas deslumbrantes,\nou melhor, isto é praticamente\numa “selfie” de pedra,\ne constatar que sempre gostamos de joias.\n\n\nAlém disso, postamos em muros\ne somos obcecados por gatos...\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhá milhares de anos.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOs arqueólogos são os guardiães\nda memória cultural\ne os porta-vozes\nde bilhões de pessoas \ne de milhares de culturas\nque vieram antes de nós.\n\n\nBoa ciência, imaginação e um pouco de fé\nsão o tripé que usamos\npara despertar os mortos.\nNo ano passado, arqueólogos fizeram\ndescobertas incríveis, incluindo:\nnovos ancestrais humanos da África do Sul;\nferramentas de 3,3 milhões de anos,\nas mais antigas já descobertas,\nno Quênia.\nE isto aqui é de uma série\nde instrumentos médicos encontrados\nno navio do Barba Negra, de 1718.\nO que estão vendo é um instrumento\nmédico para tratar a sífilis.\nAi!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPara cada uma dessas,\nhá milhares de outras descobertas\nincrivelmente importantes\nfeitas por meus colegas,\ne que não vão parar nas manchetes.\nNo entanto, acredito que nosso trabalho\nmais importante como arqueólogos\né constatar que existiram\npessoas no passado\ncom vidas que vale a pena conhecermos.\nVocês conseguem imaginar\ncomo seria o mundo hoje\nse conhecêssemos todos\nos seres humanos dessa forma?\n\n\nNo entanto, há um desafio numa escavação:\nnormalmente é mais ou menos assim.\nNão dá pra ver nada.\nEntão, por onde começar a escavar?\nAqui é no sul do Cairo.\nVamos dar uma olhada do espaço.\nNovamente, não dá pra ver muita coisa.\nVocês estão vendo uma imagem\ndo satélite WorldView-3,\nque tem uma resolução de 30 cm;\nsão 10 polegadas.\nIsso significa que, do espaço,\na 650 km de distância, podemos dar um zoom\ne enxergar seus tablets.\nComo sei disso?\nPorque sou uma arqueóloga espacial.\nVou repetir:\neu sou uma arqueóloga espacial.\nIsso significa...\n\n\n\n\n\n\nObrigada.\n\n\nSignifica que pego imagens de satélite\ne as processo usando algoritmos,\ne procuro diferenças sutis\nno espectro luminoso,\nque indica coisas enterradas no solo,\nas quais escavo e pesquiso.\nA propósito,\na NASA possui um programa\nde Arqueologia Espacial,\nportanto, é um trabalho de verdade.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVamos dar mais uma olhada.\nEstamos de volta ao sítio no sul do Cairo.\nNão dá pra ver nada.\nPrestem atenção no retângulo vermelho.\nQuando processamos\na imagem com algoritmos,\npensem num tomógrafo\nespacial computadorizado...\né isso que vocês veem.\nEssa forma retilínea é uma tumba antiga\nanteriormente desconhecida e não escavada,\ne vocês são as primeiras pessoas,\nem milhares de anos, a vê-la.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAcredito que mal começamos\nem termos do que ainda\nhá para ser descoberto.\nSomente no delta egípcio,\nescavamos menos da milésima parte de 1%\ndo volume total dos sítios egípcios.\nQuando somamos a isso\nmilhares de outros sítios\nque minha equipe e eu descobrimos,\nachamos que é só\numa gota d'água no oceano,\nse formos comparar\ncom o que ainda resta descobrir.\nQuando vemos esse trabalho incrível\nque meus colegas estão fazendo pelo mundo,\ne o que eles estão encontrando,\nacredito que haja milhões\nde sítios arqueológicos desconhecidos\nainda a serem descobertos.\nDescobri-los significa\nrevelar todo o potencial\nda nossa existência.\n\n\nMas temos um desafio.\nAno passado,\nvimos manchetes horríveis\nde terrível destruição acontecendo\nem sítios arqueológicos\ne saques em massa pelo pessoal\ndo Estado Islâmico, EI.\nO EI destruiu templos em Palmira.\nGente, quem explode um templo?\nEles destruíram o túmulo do profeta Jonas.\nE alguns saques são tão avassaladores\nque parecem até crateras na Lua.\nConhecendo o desejo do EI\nde destruir vidas humanas hoje,\né uma extensão natural para eles\ndestruírem também a identidade cultural.\nInúmeros exércitos invasores\nfizeram o mesmo ao longo da história.\n\n\nSabemos que o EI está obtendo\nlucros com a pilhagem dos sítios,\nmas não sabemos a extensão disso.\nIsso significa que qualquer objeto\ndo Oriente Médio comprado no mercado hoje\npode estar, virtualmente, \nfinanciando o terrorismo.\nQuando um sítio é saqueado,\né como se um quebra-cabeça,\ncom 90% das peças já faltando,\ntivesse o restante delas\ndanificado e ficado irreconhecível.\nÉ uma identidade\nda Antiguidade que é apagada.\nSabemos que há dois tipos\nde saques acontecendo:\nsaques por criminosos, como o EI,\ne saques locais, feitos por pessoas\ndesesperadas por dinheiro.\nTodos faríamos o mesmo\npara alimentar nossas famílias;\nnão culpo os saqueadores locais.\nMas culpo os atravessadores,\nos traficantes sem ética\ne um mercado de arte internacional\nque frequentemente exploram\nleis ambíguas ou inexistentes.\n\n\nSabemos que os saques estão acontecendo\nem escala global, e só aumentam,\nmas no momento não temos\nnenhuma ferramenta para evitá-los.\nEntão, este é o começo da mudança.\nMinha equipe e eu acabamos de concluir\num estudo sobre saques no Egito.\nPesquisamos dados abertos\ne mapeamos o total desses saques,\nde 2002 a 2013.\nDescobrimos evidências\nde saques e destruição em 267 sítios,\ne mapeamos mais de 200 mil\nfossos de pilhagem.\nÉ impressionante.\nE, juntando esses dados,\ndá pra ver marcados aqui\nos fossos de pilhagem.\nEm um sítio, o saque foi terrível:\nem 2009, 2011, 2012...\ncentenas e centenas de fossos.\n\n\nJuntando todos os dados,\ndescobrimos que, contrariamente\nao que se pensa,\nos saques não ficaram piores no Egito\nem 2011, depois da Primavera Árabe,\nmas, em 2009, depois da recessão global.\nAssim, mostramos com \"big data\"\nque a pilhagem é basicamente\numa questão econômica.\nSe não fizermos alguma coisa\npara deter o problema,\ntodos os sítios do Egito, até 2040,\nserão afetados por saques.\nPortanto, estamos num ponto crucial.\nSomos a geração com todas as ferramentas\ne todas as tecnologias\npara barrar os saques,\nmas não estamos sendo\nrápidos o suficiente.\n\n\nÀs vezes um sítio arqueológico\npode nos surpreender pela resiliência.\nAcabei de voltar do trabalho de campo,\nonde coliderei uma missão conjunta com\no Ministério das Antiguidades do Egito,\nnum sítio chamado Lisht.\nEsse sítio data do Médio Império no Egito,\nentre 2000 e 1750 a.C.\nO Médio Império foi um período\ndo florescimento da Antiguidade.\nDepois de um tempo de intenso\nconflito interno e desafios ambientais,\no Egito se recuperou\ncom incrível ressurgimento\nde arte, arquitetura e literatura.\nÉ o meu período favorito\npara estudar o Egito,\nporque ele nos ensina muito\nsobre como sobreviver e prosperar\napós grandes desastres.\n\n\nBem, neste sítio, já tínhamos\nmapeado inúmeros pontos de saque.\nLIsht é um sítio real; devem ter sido\nenterradas lá milhares de pessoas\nque viviam e trabalhavam\nna corte do faraó.\nDá pra ver aqui o antes e o depois;\nas dezenas de fossos saqueados:\nnorte de Lisht e o sul de Lisht, antes...\ne depois.\nA primeira vez que visitamos este sítio,\npodíamos ver as tumbas\nde muitos altos oficiais\nque tinham sido saqueadas.\nDeixem-me colocar em perspectiva\no que foi levado.\nImaginem uma área de 4 m²\ncheia de caixões, joias\ne incrível estatuária.\nMultipliquem isso por mil.\nIsso é o que foi levado.\n\n\nQuando começamos a trabalhar,\nmeu codiretor egípcio, Mohamed Youssef,\nchegou pra mim e falou:\n\"Temos de trabalhar\nnuma determinada tumba.\nEla tem sido atacada por saqueadores.\nSe não fizermos nada, eles vão voltar\".\nConcordei, obviamente, mas não achei\nque fôssemos encontrar nada ali.\nAchei que os saqueadores\ntinham roubado tudo.\nMas começamos a descobrir\nincríveis altos-relevos.\nOlhem esta pintura:\nsimplesmente maravilhosa.\nComeçamos a descobrir inscrições gravadas.\nE mesmo os títulos do dono da tumba;\nhavia títulos como\n\"Superintendente do Exército\",\n\"Superintendente do Tesouro\".\nComecei a ter esperança.\nTalvez, apenas talvez,\nencontrássemos seu nome.\nPara os antigos egípcios, deixar o nome\npara a posteridade era um objetivo.\nEntão, um belo dia,\nsurgiu isto aqui.\nEste é o nome do dono da tumba: Intef.\nPodem vê-lo escrito aqui, em hieróglifos.\nTrabalhando com minha equipe egípcia,\nconseguimos restaurar\no nome de alguém de 3,9 mil anos atrás.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTrabalhando com meus colegas egípcios,\ncelebramos esse momento\nde descoberta compartilhada.\nO que fazíamos juntos\nera correto e verdadeiro.\nDescobrimos esta incrível\nporta falsa, quase intacta.\nNela, lemos sobre Intef e seus registros.\nNa verdade, podemos vê-lo sentado aqui.\nO que percebemos foi que tudo\nque supúnhamos sobre os sítios saqueados\nse provou errado.\n\n\nTodos os dias nos sítios\ntrabalhamos lado a lado com 70 egípcios\ncomo colegas e amigos.\nEm face de tanto ódio e ignorância\ncontra as pessoas do Oriente Médio,\ncada momento no sítio parecia\num protesto pela paz.\nTrabalhando com pessoas\ndiferentes da gente,\nque não pensam ou falam como nós,\nnossa missão compartilhada\nda descoberta arqueológica\napaga todas as diferenças superficiais.\nO que aprendi nessa temporada\nfoi que a arqueologia\nnão é sobre o que descobrimos.\nÉ sobre o que podemos\nprovar ser possível.\n\n\nÀs vezes, ao viajar, acabamos\nencontrando nossa família perdida,\nnão aquela com quem compartilhamos genes,\nmas um verbete compartilhado\nno livro da vida.\nEste é Omer Farrouk, meu irmão.\nOmer é um gufti de uma vila\nao norte de Luxor, chamada Guft.\nOs guftis pertencem a uma famosa\ntradição em egiptologia.\nEles alguma,\ndados de GPS ou mapeamento dos sítios.\nVamos tratá-los como os dados\nde um paciente humano,\ne não revelar suas localizações.\nVocês vão receber uma área aleatória,\nde 20m x 20m ou 30m x 30m,\ne começar a procurar características.\nTemos processado, em lotes,\ngrandes quantidades de dados de satélite\nusando algoritmos, de modo\nque possam encontrar coisas,\ngarantindo, assim, que façam boa ciência.\n\n\nEntão, vão começar a procurar.\nO que veem? Estão vendo um templo?\nEstão vendo uma tumba? Uma pirâmide?\nVeem algum possível\ndano ou saque a um sítio?\nEntão, vão começar a marcar o que está lá.\nE, ao lado, sempre\nvai haver ricos exemplos\ndo que exatamente vocês\nestão vendo, para ajudar a guiá-los.\nTodos os dados coletados serão\ncompartilhados com entidades credenciadas\ne vão ajudar a criar\num novo sistema de alarme global\npara ajudar na proteção dos sítios.\nMas não vamos parar por aí.\nTodos os arqueólogos com quem\ncompartilhamos suas descobertas\nvão levar vocês com eles \nquando começarem a escavar,\npor meio do Periscope,\ndo Google Plus e de mídias sociais.\n\n\nHá cem anos, a arqueologia\nera coisa para ricos.\nHá 50 anos, para homens.\nAgora é principalmente para acadêmicos.\nNosso objetivo é democratizar\no processo da descoberta arqueológica\ne permitir a qualquer um participar.\nHá 94 anos,\nHoward Carter descobriu\na tumba do rei Tut.\nQuem será o próximo Howard Carter?\nPode ser um de vocês.\n\n\nAo criar essa plataforma,\nvamos encontrar milhões de lugares\nocupados por bilhões de pessoas\nque vieram antes de nós.\nSe quisermos responder às grandes\nquestões sobre quem somos nós\ne de onde viemos,\nnão devemos buscar as respostas\nem pirâmides ou palácios,\nmas em cidades e vilas\ndaqueles que vieram antes de nós.\nSe quisermos conhecer o passado,\né hora de inverter a pirâmide.\nTer consciência de que vale\na pena salvar o passado\nsignifica muito mais.\nSignifica...\nque vale a pena nos salvar também.\nE a maior história jamais contada\né a história da nossa jornada\nhumana compartilhada.\nMas a única maneira de escrevê-la\né se fizermos isso juntos.\nVenham comigo.\n\n\nObrigada.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n",
