Mapbox needs Credit Card defaultly now

step 1: go to mapbox.com -> signup for free
step 2: enter your email with @gmail.edu (for ex. -> yourUserName@gmail.edu) and other details as you want.
You will redirected to verify email, now they will not ask for credit card.
step 3: there is an option for change email. change it to yourUserName@gmail.com
step 4: verify your email now.
step 5: you will see a beautiful dashboard with public token.

Had the same problem. If your script cant access the token because of some issue, it will show like that. See if you have written mapToken in the showPageMap.js and not 'mapToken'

It did for me Just now. I used the my Indian university email ID. which ends with "@ppsu.ac.in", that too worked.!
